How the Champions League works

All 36 clubs are ranked in a single league table instead of separate groups. Each club plays 8 league-phase matches — 4 at home and 4 away — against 8 different opponents, drawn from four seeding pots so the schedule spreads across a range of strengths.

League-phase results decide who advances: there is no separate group to win, just one ranking. Where a club finishes in that table determines whether it goes straight into the knockout stage, has to fight through an extra play-off round first, or is out of Europe for the season.

Knockout path

Top-8 league-phase finishers go straight to the round of 16 — clubs placed 9th–24th must first win a two-legged play-off tie to reach it.

How the standings work

Like a domestic league, a win is worth 3 points and a draw 1 point. Every club's league-phase ranking is decided purely by points (then UEFA's published tiebreak criteria for clubs level on points) — there are no separate groups to win, just one table that determines who advances straight through, who plays an extra knockout play-off round, and who is out of the UEFA Champions League for the season.

What makes the UEFA Champions League different

  • The Champions League is UEFA's top-tier club competition — access is earned through a club's domestic league position or by winning the previous season's Europa League.
  • Its 8-match league phase is the longest of the three UEFA club competitions, and its 36-club table is the largest.
  • Since the 2024/25 reform, a club that finishes outside the top 24 is eliminated from European competition for the season — there is no longer a route down into the Europa League.
