How Major League Soccer works in 2026
MLS is the top professional soccer league across the United States and Canada. Its 30 clubs are split equally between Eastern and Western Conferences. Each club plays 34 regular-season fixtures: 28 against conference opponents (home and away) and six against clubs from the other conference.
Teams earn three points for a win and one for a draw. Each conference has its own standings and playoff seeding. The best overall regular-season record earns the Supporters' Shield, while the winner of the postseason championship earns MLS Cup — these are separate honours.
The 2026 postseason begins with Wild Card matches (seeds 8 and 9 in each conference). Their winners join seeds 1–7 in a best-of-three first round. Single-match conference semifinals and finals lead to MLS Cup. MLS does not use automatic promotion or relegation.

How the standings work
MLS awards 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. Teams are ranked within separate Eastern and Western Conference standings, using MLS official tiebreak rules (wins first, then goal difference). The Supporters' Shield is based on regular-season performance; MLS Cup is decided by playoffs. BetLogic does not combine both conference tables into a fictional playoff-seeding table.

What makes the MLS different
- MLS separates the Supporters' Shield (best regular-season record) from MLS Cup (the postseason champion). A conference leader is not automatically the MLS Cup winner.
- The 2026 schedule has a conference-heavy, unbalanced fixture list. Rank teams within the conference rather than assuming one equivalent all-league table.
- The 2027 Sprint Season is a shorter 14-game transition before MLS moves to a July-to-May calendar in 2027/28. Season-specific rules matter when analysing form or comparing totals.
