Kane reaches 125 England appearances
Harry Kane has reached another landmark in an England career already defined by records. The England captain made his 125th senior international appearance against Czechia at Wembley on 6 October, drawing level with former goalkeeper Peter Shilton at the top of the England men’s all-time appearances list. Kane reached the milestone 11 years and 193 days after his senior international debut, considerably faster than Shilton, whose 125 appearances were spread across almost two decades between 1970 and 1990. One more England appearance would leave Kane alone as the most-capped player in the history of the men’s senior team.
Two goals on a record-equalling night
Kane did more than simply reach the appearance record. He scored twice as England beat Czechia 3-0 in the UEFA Nations League at Wembley, taking his international total from 89 to 91 goals. England opened the scoring through a Vladimír Coufal own goal after Kane created the danger from the right. The captain then converted from close range before half-time and added his second after the break. By the time he left the pitch in the 82nd minute, Kane had marked his 125th appearance with two goals and a direct role in all three of England’s goals.
How far ahead is Kane as England's record goalscorer?
| Player | England caps | Goals |
|---|---|---|
| Harry Kane | 125 | 91 |
| Wayne Rooney | 120 | 53 |
| Bobby Charlton | 106 | 49 |
| Gary Lineker | 80 | 48 |
| Jimmy Greaves | 57 | 44 |
Kane’s appearance milestone comes with his position as England’s record goalscorer already firmly established. His 91 goals put him 38 clear of Wayne Rooney, who previously held the record with 53. Bobby Charlton is third with 49, followed by Gary Lineker on 48 and Jimmy Greaves on 44. Kane overtook Rooney in March 2023. More than three years later, the question is no longer whether he will finish as England’s leading scorer, but how far he can extend a record that has already moved well beyond its previous benchmark.

Kane's major tournament record
Kane’s England numbers are not built only on qualifying matches and friendlies. He has scored 14 goals at FIFA World Cups, making him England’s leading scorer in the competition, four ahead of Gary Lineker. He has another seven goals at European Championships, level with Alan Shearer for England’s best total at the tournament. Combined, Kane has scored 21 times across World Cup and EURO finals. Those goals have come across 36 major-tournament appearances, underlining how much of his international career has been played at the highest level.
From scoring on debut to 125 caps
Kane’s senior England career began at Wembley on 27 March 2015. Introduced as a substitute against Lithuania, he scored his first international goal within seconds of entering the match. What followed was an international career that moved rapidly from breakthrough striker to captain and record goalscorer. He has since represented England at every major tournament from EURO 2016 onwards and accumulated 125 appearances across World Cups, European Championships, qualifying campaigns, the Nations League and international friendlies. More than eleven years after his debut, Wembley was also the setting for the appearance that brought him level with Shilton.
What records can Kane break next?
The next milestone is the most immediate one: Kane needs one more appearance to move beyond Shilton and become the outright record appearance-maker for England’s men’s senior team. There is also an increasingly visible goalscoring landmark ahead. With 91 international goals, Kane is nine away from becoming a 100-goal international. His current scoring rate means that target is no longer a distant statistical curiosity, although reaching it will depend on his availability, England’s schedule and how long he continues his international career. For now, the 125-cap mark leaves Kane simultaneously level at the top of England’s appearance list and comfortably clear at the top of its goalscoring list.
