Dani Carvajal to Getafe: What Is Confirmed and What Still Needs LaLiga Approval

Dani Carvajal has passed a medical with Getafe and the club say an agreement with the player is in place. One important step remains before the move can be treated as complete: LaLiga approval.

Has Dani Carvajal signed for Getafe?

Dani Carvajal has not yet been formally presented as a Getafe player. Getafe president Ángel Torres says the former Real Madrid captain has passed his medical and an agreement between the parties is closed, but the move still requires an agreement with LaLiga before it can be treated as complete.

Dani Carvajal appears closer than ever to continuing his career with Getafe, but there is still an important distinction between an advanced agreement and a completed transfer. The former Real Madrid captain has passed a medical with Getafe and, according to club president Ángel Torres, an agreement between the two sides has been reached. The final obstacle is now outside the pitch. Getafe still need the necessary agreement with LaLiga before the move can be treated as complete.

What has actually been confirmed?

The story moved quickly on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Cadena SER reported that Getafe and Carvajal were in talks over an immediate move, with the defender available as a free agent after leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season. At that stage, the deal was not described as closed. Hours later, the situation had advanced significantly. Speaking to DAZN, Getafe president Ángel Torres confirmed that Carvajal had already completed a medical with the club and that the agreement between the parties was in place. That moves the story beyond simple interest or exploratory negotiations. But it does not yet make Carvajal a registered Getafe player.

Why LaLiga approval still matters

The remaining issue is Getafe’s ability to complete the registration within LaLiga’s financial controls. Torres made that distinction clear: the agreement with the player is in place, but the club still has to resolve the final step with LaLiga. That is why describing the transfer as fully completed would be premature. In practical terms, three different stages should remain separate: agreement with the player; medical clearance; registration and final administrative approval. Getafe appear to have cleared the first two. The third is still pending.

Why Carvajal is available outside the normal transfer window

Carvajal is a free agent after bringing his long Real Madrid career to an end at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. Real Madrid announced his departure in May after more than two decades at the club across the academy and first team. His senior career in Madrid included six European Cups and 27 major trophies, making him one of the most decorated players of the club’s modern era. His status as a free agent allows Getafe to pursue the deal outside the usual summer transfer window. The registration requirements, however, do not disappear simply because there is no transfer fee between clubs.

The move makes football sense for Getafe

Carvajal would arrive with something Getafe cannot easily acquire through a normal mid-season signing: elite-level experience. He has played Champions League finals, title races, international tournaments and high-pressure knockout football. For José Bordalás, the attraction goes beyond reputation. Carvajal can provide experience on the right side, competitive intensity and leadership to a squad entering one of the busiest periods of its season. Getafe are preparing to compete across LaLiga, the UEFA Conference League and the Copa del Rey during October. Their next domestic fixture is a trip to Barcelona on 10 October, followed five days later by their Conference League match away to Universitatea Craiova. That schedule makes additional depth immediately useful.

There is also a question of role

The interesting football question is not whether the 34-year-old Carvajal is the same player who operated at his physical peak for Real Madrid. He does not need to be. At Getafe, his value could come from a different combination of qualities: positional experience, defensive awareness, aggression in duels and the ability to manage difficult moments. Bordalás has historically valued players capable of competing in physically demanding matches and maintaining tactical discipline. That makes the potential fit more interesting than the headline value of the name alone.

What happens next?

The next meaningful update is straightforward. Getafe need to complete the remaining process with LaLiga. Until that happens, the responsible description is that Carvajal has passed his medical and agreed terms with Getafe, but his arrival is not yet fully complete. If that final approval arrives, one of the most decorated defenders in recent Spanish football will begin a very different chapter of his career only a short distance from where the previous one ended.
