Villarreal punish Liverpool's slow start

Liverpool were forced into a major recovery after Villarreal scored twice inside the opening half-hour at Anfield. Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a misplaced Virgil van Dijk header to put the visitors ahead, before Sergi Cardona finished a quick counterattack to make it 2–0. The Spanish side were compact without the ball and direct when space opened, repeatedly testing Liverpool's defensive transitions. Andoni Iraola's team had possession but initially struggled to turn it into clear chances. The contest changed only when Alexis Mac Allister attacked Kostas Tsimikas' corner and headed in on 36 minutes.

Mac Allister and Araújo restore parity before half-time

Liverpool's first goal transformed the momentum of the match. They pushed Villarreal deeper and found an equaliser in first-half stoppage time when Rio Ngumoha crossed for Ronald Araújo to head in at the back post. That made it 2–2 at the interval despite Villarreal having controlled the opening phase. Ryan Gravenberch, back after a domestic suspension, started in midfield, while Frimpong and Szoboszlai were absent as expected. Iraola then introduced Florian Wirtz for Araújo at half-time, increasing Liverpool's attacking threat and giving the hosts another player capable of receiving between Villarreal's midfield and defence.

Ngumoha drives the second-half turnaround

Liverpool dominated the early second half and eventually took the lead through Mac Allister's second goal. Ngumoha beat defenders on the right and supplied the pass for the midfielder to finish from close range in the 65th minute. Three minutes later, Wirtz made it 4–2 after Cody Gakpo found him during another fast Liverpool attack. The two goals completed a four-goal response after the hosts had been 2–0 down. Ngumoha's influence went beyond the comeback itself. Liverpool later confirmed that, at 18 years and 52 days, he became the youngest player in the club's history to provide an assist in European competition. UEFA also named him Player of the Match.

Oluwaseyi creates a nervous finish

Villarreal did not collapse after Liverpool's fourth goal. Ayoze Pérez hit the post before Tani Oluwaseyi converted a back-post volley in the 87th minute to reduce the deficit to 4–3. The visitors then pushed for an equaliser, but Liverpool managed the remaining minutes and protected their advantage. Villarreal's own account stressed that the Spanish side rediscovered an attacking threat late in the contest after struggling to retain possession during Liverpool's strongest second-half spell. The late goal ensured the match remained competitive until the final whistle, but Liverpool's four-goal response proved enough to preserve their perfect Champions League start.

What the result means for Liverpool

The victory gave Liverpool nine points from their opening three Champions League league-phase matches and preserved their perfect European record. It also represented a third consecutive win in all competitions. The result nevertheless exposed a recurring risk. Liverpool were vulnerable when their pressure was bypassed and gave Villarreal enough space to establish a two-goal lead. Their response showed significant attacking depth, particularly through Ngumoha, Mac Allister and substitute Wirtz, but the defensive problems from the opening half-hour remain relevant. Villarreal leave Anfield with three points from their first three Champions League matches after a win over Napoli and defeats against Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. Their next European fixture is at home to Paris Saint-Germain on 3 November.
